The items below describe what we do in worship. They are also available in the pews where people are seated during worship.
Minute for Ministry
Most weeks a member of our congregation briefly shares insightful information about one of our church’s service projects or outreach activities.
Prelude
A piece of music designed to give us time to try to set aside other concerns and focus our minds and hearts on worship.
Call to Worship
This call-and-response reading prepares us for worship and demonstrates the significance of individual participation during the service.
Invocation
This opening prayer calls upon God to bless us and be present with us during our time together.
Hymn of Praise
On the last line of the introduction to each hymn (a song sung together by the congregation), please stand and sing with us if you are able, using the hymnal on the pew in front of you.
Pastoral Prayer
The goal of this prayer is to bring before God all of the joys and concerns of our church family and global community. This prayer leads directly into the Lord’s Prayer. Sample Pastoral Prayers and Sermons can be found on the Pastor's Page.
Lord’s Prayer
We recite this prayer every week to remember the way that Christ instructed us to pray as recorded in the Gospel of Matthew:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name / Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven / Give us this day our daily bread / And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us / And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil / For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever / Amen
Hymn of Gratitude
During this hymn we prepare for the offering as we give thanks for the many things God has given us.
Offertory
During this time of thanksgiving church leaders (called “deacons”) collect monetary gifts from the congregation. These donations help operate our church, and at least 10% of our annual budget directly goes toward supporting outside community service projects and local charities. This is a collection of gifts, and guests are not expected to “pay” for joining us this morning!
Doxology
This is the congregation’s way of celebrating that we have gifts that we can share with God. Here are the words:
Praise God from whom all blessings flow / praise him, all creatures here below / praise him above, ye heavenly host / praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost / Amen
Reading of the Scripture
We stand to honor God’s Word as we read together the Biblical passage that will be the basis for the sermon.
Anthem
Our all-volunteer choir and musicians perform a special hymn, typically highlighting the central message of the service. Lyrics to the anthem are printed in your Worship Folder.
Sermon
The pastor or guest preacher tries to apply the Bible to our daily lives. Sample Pastoral Prayers and Sermons can be found on the Pastor's Page.
Service of Communion
We share communion on the first Sunday of every month, and also on special occasions, to remember the sacrifice Christ made for all of us. We gather at God’s table, and not our table, and so if you have made a commitment to follow Jesus Christ, regardless of your church affiliation, then please partake of the bread and the cup.
Hymn of Commitment
This hymn affords all of us a chance to consider the steps God would have us take in response to today’s worship. If you feel moved to make a public commitment today, the minister will greet you at the front of the sanctuary at this time and present you to the congregation. There are Next Step documents are available in the foyer that provide more information.
Benediction
This spoken (and sometimes musical) blessing is meant to empower us as we leave the sanctuary and return to life in the world.
Postlude
This is a musical celebration at the end of the service. Most people normally begin leaving when the Postlude starts. Some sit and listen to the postlude. Either is fine.
