Celebrating 21 Years of Keeping Broadway Brightly Shining

James likes to tease about his questionable seniority, as they both started within weeks of each other, but Facilities Manager Don Irvan has hit a milestone this week. In celebrating his 21st anniversary, Don is quickly approaching Dr. Perry’s record as longest serving staff member at Broadway. With his infectious laugh and willingattitude, Don has not only become part of Broadway’s family, but is practically synonymous with Broadway’s welcoming spirit.

He fondly recalls his first job came about through two things – his ability to keep his hair combed and his shoes shined. “My first job, I walked four and a half miles to get there,” he explained. “I was just 15 years old and obviously didn’t have a driver’s license!” That sense of dedication and accomplishment has stuck with Don throughout his career and easily influences those who work alongside him.

Answering a small newspaper ad in September of 1996, Don came to us after serving 22 years in Law Enforcement, three years as a   paper maker, three years as a machinist, and six years as a mechanic. When you get to know Don, it’s easy to see that he’s good with his hands. “I love getting my hands dirty,” he grinned. “Yard work might be my favorite thing to do.” Those capable hands have served him well with the occasional leaky pipes and everyday maintenance on our unique campus.

Originally from Virginia, he and his wife, Eva, still have strong ties to the other Commonwealth. Their children, Justin and Jennifer, still call Virginia home and grandchildren, Harlie, Baillie, and Chase, are always eager for them to visit.

Despite his abundant jokes and positive spirit, so many understand the love and devotion he, along with James and Barbara, put into making Broadway a warm and welcoming place for all. “My favorite part of the day is recess,” he joked. When not overseeing daily activities in the church, you can find him enjoying a bottle of Ale 8 One in his office.

In preparation for this article, he wanted to express his profound appreciation to all of those at Broadway who trust him as a caretaker of the church and grounds. “The building has remained about the same over the years, but the people have become like family,” Don added.

Please join us in congratulating him in this remarkable achievement and best wishes for his future at Broadway.
